Artifact: Green Camping Video

Project Description
For EDTEC 561, I worked together with fellow EDTEC classmates Sara Baha and Adam Birst to create an instructional video as one of our course projects.  The task was to create a short instructional video about any topic that we chose.  We decided to make a video on the importance of keeping a green environment when camping (trash management).  Our video was less than five minutes in duration, but provided excellent information to the viewer, and came out really well in the end.

EDTEC Standard
This project was a great example for the process dimension of this portfolio.  We did not just go out and shoot the video.  There were quite a few steps in the process.  To achieve our goal of creating our instructional video, we took the following steps:

Problems or Opportunities
This project presented me with an opportunity to work with my peers and really create something special.  As a team, we all worked together through the process, utilizing each other’s strengths to get the job done.  The only problem that really had to be overcome was getting all of our schedules to clear in order to shoot the footage, but that was solved rather easily.

My Capabilities
I am a great team player, and have always worked well with others.  Also, I do have a pretty good imagination, and shared my thoughts with the group on how to proceed with this project.  My older brother is in the film industry, and I had been exposed to film shoots in the past, so I had some prior knowledge of how to set up quickly and shoot the video.  We actually completed all of our shots in about half a day, which was about what I expected it would take.

Lessons Learned
I would say that probably the thing that I learned most during this process was how to use the editing software to put the rough footage together into the finished product.  Sara Baha was well versed in how to use Apple Imovie, and taught Adam and I how to use the program.
I also learned a lot about how much really goes into the preparation of creating a video, even if it is a really short one.  The planning, scripting, and storyboarding really took up a majority of the time, but I now understand that the more thorough preparation done prior to the shoot, the easier it is to get the filming done quickly.  Having the whole plan laid out beforehand made the filming extremely easy to get done.
